Ryan Mills

Ryan Mills is an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Sault Tribe and currently serves as their Senior Attorney. Ryan earned his Juris Doctorate, in 2014, from Michigan State University College of Law with a Certificate in Indigenous Law from the Indigenous Law and Policy Center. During law school he gained experience in Tribal Law by working in the Indigenous Law and Policy Center and after graduation as the Policy Center’s Legal Fellow. He has worked as In-House Council for Lummi Nation in Bellingham, WA; worked on contract with Nooksack Indian Tribe in Deming, WA; and from 2017 to 2023 worked In-House at Upper Skagit Indian Tribe in Sedro Woolley, WA, notably getting to work with their General Counsel and outside Counsel on the Upper Skagit Tribe v. Lundgren United States Supreme Court Case. Ryan has appeared as counsel in treaty fishing rights cases in the Western District Court of Washington on US v. WA and in the Western District Court of Michigan on US v. MI and has dedicated his career to working for Tribal Governments, In-House, to further Tribal Sovereignty and protect Tribal Treaty rights.
